I think that Spring is one of those special times of year in Orkney. The sun rises earlier and the light stretches longer into our evenings producing those special colours that I like to paint so much. In Kirkwall and Stromness the garden birds are busy building nests in the stone dykes, bushes and trees. Out at The Brough of Birsay, Westray and many other sites, migrating birds have arrived after their long journeys over the sea. My favourite little bird, the puffin is busy burrowing holes to make their nests in the grassy turf of the cliffside ready for their new family of pufflings. The oystercatchers chatter loudly, building their nests sometimes in the most daft places on the roadside verges and even one year in the middle of a busy roundabout! Wild flowers like celandines and buttercups carpet our fields in bright yellow and bluebells begin to appear along with snowdrops at Happy valley, Binscarth woods and the Willows in Kirkwall. Crows cackle high in the trees busy building their huge twig nests.
