Boats are an integral part of Orkney society. Orkney is known for it's farming industry but also its fishing industry, from small wooden yawls to bigger boats. Abandoned small boats provide inspiration for me with there textured wood and faded colours such as ' Old yawl in North Ronaldsay, Orkney' but I also like to paint the boats and their reflections in both Kirkwall and Stromness harbours, see 'Summer's evening at Kirkwall harbour' and 'Boat shapes'. We often get large sailing ships or schooners as in the picture 'Tall ship, Kirkwall pier' visiting in the summer months which also make a good subject. Of course small boats are still used all around the coast and often appear accompanied by an old tractor as in the watercolour pictures, 'Going fishing, Skaill beach, Orkney' and ' Going fishing, The Brough of Birsay, Orkney'. 'Fisherman's boat abstract' is a recent mixed media painting of 'The Michael J', a lovely old wooden boat which still goes creel fishing around Kirkwall bay. It appears in several of my Kirkwall boat pictures.
