Every year about the middle of May, the puffins arrive. They are probably Orkney's favourite bird and many visitors come especially to see them. They are incredibly cute and smaller than you might imagine. Each bird has a wonderful colourful beak and bright orange feet. They make loud croaking noises and chap beaks with each other incessantly. The best places to see them is at The Brough of Birsay on the mainland of Orkney and Burrian castle in Westray. There are lots of other sites but you need to head for reasonably high cliffs. They live in burrows on the side of the cliffs and usually go out to fish for sand eels during the day, coming back to their nests around teatime.
I have painted them many times over the years and this collection includes many of those pictures. I hope you enjoy seeing them!
