A Tribute to Dr John Rae the arctic explorer
A mixed media painting by Orkney artist Jane Glue
printed on C-Type Matt
Dr John Rae was a famous Orkney explorer. He was born at the house of Clestrain in Stenness. This picture depicts the house with all its secret memories hidden with in the image. I set the painting in a snow scene as that seemed to tie with being in the arctic. In amongst the snow you can see some of the items he would have taken with him on his travels from his fiddle to his clothes and sledge. This painting is a story of his discovery of The North West passage in the arctic. We have a very good display of these items and Dr John Rae's story in Stromness museum. This painting was part of an exhibition I did along with Canadian artist Sheena McGoogan to celebrate his 200th birthday. I was very pleased that the museum excepted this artwork as part of their display.
