The jacket and Canadian blanket on the washing line represent his Arctic clothing. His fiddle and sledge are from his travels and lie hidden in the grassy foreground. The original of this print was painted on a piece of 'found' driftwood. The image depicts John Rae walking across the Arctic snow in his snow shoes with his dogs. Sir John Franklin's lost ship, the 'Erebeus' lies in the ice in the distance. Most spectacular of all is the painted mural above the altar by artist 'Domenico Chiocchetti', he copied the image from his own small prayer card. I personally think that the chapel looks like a large iced cake from the outside! a beautiful cake of course! Apparently there were two chapels but only the one was saved.
