A print from a watercolour painting by Orkney artist Jane Glue
printed on C-Type Matt
Although we have the northern lights in Orkney reasonably often, I rarely see them as I live in Kirkwall where the street lighting interferes with night sky and secondly it is usually quite late or early in the morning and I am usually in bed! When I have seen them it is a magical experience. On this particular night the lights were very good and visible in Kirkwall earlier in the evening. Unfortunately I was actually teaching an evening class that night but one of my pupils arrived the next week of the class with photographs of the sky and he kindly allowed me to paint them! I created the sky with the 'wet on wet' technique, by dragging a clean wet sponge through the wet paint to lift some of the colour away. I also used a touch of masking fluid to create the stars. You add the fluid which is made of liquid latex before you start painting and this means you can save any small areas that you don't want to paint around.
