A limited edition print from an original watercolour painting by Orkney artist Jane Glue
printed on C-Type Matt paper in print run's of 100 of each size.
This image was originally painted for an exhibition called 'From Orkney to Canada' that Canadian artist 'Sheena McCoogan' (Ken McCoogan the writers wife) and I did together in 2012. This old ruined Georgian house of Clestrain is in the parish of Stenness and was John Rae's childhood home. The jacket and Canadian blanket on the washing line represent his Arctic clothing. His fiddle and sledge are from his travels and lie hidden in the grassy foreground. The wild geese in the sky above are there because on the day I visited Clestrain, geese were flying back and fore over the house and I thought John Rae would have seen them when he was alive , here in Orkney and in the Arctic.
There are future plans by 'The John Rae society' to re build Clestrain and develop a museum telling the story of John Rae's life and travels.
