I have always liked the affect of watercolours when I use the 'wet on wet' watercolour technique which allows the paint colours to merge and create 'blooms' as as in this image. Ultramarine blue when mixed with other colours creates a 'granulated' affect and is perfect for painting Orkney's rainy skies.
