A limited edition print from a watercolour painting by Orkney artist Jane Glue
printed on C-Type Matt paper in editions of 100 prints.
The Churchill Barriers are very hard to paint! I find all the concrete blocks a bit daunting! but when you add in a view of Holm village and a beautiful coloured sea, it helps to make the subject more attractive. The Churchill barriers are part of Orkney's wartime history and were built during WW2 by the Italian prisoners of war to protect the Naval base of Scapa flow from German attacks after the German submarine U-47 commanded by Gunther Prien sunk the British battleship HMS Royal Oak in 1939 with the loss of 833 men.
