Northern skies at the ring of brodgar
A print from a watercolour painting by Orkney artist Jane Glue
printed on C-Type Matt
We often see the northern lights during the winter time in Orkney and it is a magical sight! However they are very unpredictable and often it means just luck to be there at the perfect time. The northern lights can appear in lots of different colours from pinks to purples and greens to blues and they are very exciting to paint! I always use the 'wet on wet' technique which involves dropping wet paint on to already dampened paper. To achieve the lighter areas I took a small damp sponge and dragged it through the paint while still wet to lift out the colour. The process in itself is very fast but you have to get it right first time so it takes a bit of practice!
